    In line with the Enterprise Agreement, there are four nominated WHS roles within each parliamentarian’s Commonwealth-funded office:

    • WHS Site Officer
    • First Aid Officer
    • Emergency Officer
    • Deputy Emergency Officer.

    These roles assist parliamentarians, MOP(S) Act employees and the PWSS to meet their duties under the WHS Act. If you are interested in nominating for one of these roles, please complete and submit the form below.

    First Aid Officer

    A First Aid Officer (FAO) is responsible for monitoring and maintaining first aid facilities in their office, administering first aid and assisting the WHS Site Officer (where the WHS Site Officer is not also the FAO), in monitoring and reporting WHS risks and incidents.

    While the responsibilities of the appointed FAO will vary slightly depending on the nature of the office in which they work, each FAO must: 

    • maintain their First Aid accreditation to the level of ‘Provide First Aid’ 
    • complete annual CPR refresher training 
    • provide first aid within their office to all persons when required 
    • familiarise themselves with medical resources in the local area 
    • undertake regular checks of the office first aid kit 
    • assist the WHS Site Officer (where the WHS Site Officer is not also the FAO) to carry out site inspections and respond to WHS enquiries 
    • assist with any incident investigations and unresolved issues connected with the use of first aid supplies, or action by the WHS Site Officer at the office 

    promote good WHS practice within the office.

    Emergency Officer

    An Emergency Officer provides information on emergency management and coordinates emergency responses, performing essential functions that cannot be conducted off-site or remotely.

    While the responsibilities of the appointed Emergency Officer will vary slightly depending on the nature of the office in which they work, each Emergency Officer must: 

    • undertake training identified by PWSS to fulfil the role 
    • in conjunction with the emergency response management service provider, facilitate a full-scale evacuation exercise at their office annually, followed by a de-briefing session with the provider 
    • facilitate emergency evacuations of their office as necessary 
    • provide new employees and volunteers in their office with an induction on the emergency procedures in the workplace 
    • sign in all contractors and ensure that they have completed a brief induction on the emergency procedures in the workplace 
    • assist the WHS site officer (where the WHS Site Officer is not also the Emergency Officer) to carry out quarterly inspections and respond to WHS enquiries 

    promote good WHS practice within the site.

    Deputy Emergency Officer

    A Deputy Emergency Officer is required to facilitate a smooth transition should the Emergency Officer cease their role.

    WHS Site Officer

    A WHS Site Officer provides and coordinates certain WHS tasks at their particular site(s) of employment, performing essential functions that cannot be conducted off-site or remotely.

    While responsibilities of the appointed WHS Site Officer will vary slightly depending on the nature of the office in which they work, each WHS Site Officer must: 

    • undertake training identified by PWSS to fulfil the role 
    • provide new MOP(S) Act employees and volunteers working at their office with WHS induction into the office environment 
    • conduct WHS inspections for the site
    • assist fellow MOP(S) Act employees to report hazards if required 
    • assist fellow MOP(S) Act employees to notify health and safety related incidents, where required 
    • assist with any incident investigations and unresolved WHS issues at the office 

    promote good WHS practice within the office.
